The Sherline 7.0mm (.2756) WW Collet offers a precise and efficient method for mounting cylindrical parts or bar stock in a lathe, ensuring high centering accuracy. This collet functions as a small, precision 3-jaw chuck that fits into a specially designed tapered adapter within the headstock. A drawbar threads into the collet's backside, drawing it into the adapter, which causes the jaws to close and securely grip the part to be machined. This system is known for its accuracy, accommodating a small range of diameters with a tolerance of approximately ±.001″ (.02mm).

WW collets are distinct from milling collets due to their through-hole design, allowing stock to pass entirely through. The maximum diameter for stock passing through is 3/16″ or 4.5mm, although larger collets, known as "pot" chucks, are available. These collets maintain a maximum runout of .002″ or less, ensuring precision in machining tasks. When the WW collet adapter is properly trued, it operates with optimal accuracy, although greater runout may occur with longer parts further from the collet's front.

Sherline collets are logically numbered, with metric collets beginning with part number 1178, followed by size in 0.1 mm increments. These collets are manufactured to standard WW specifications but are not hardened. It is crucial to verify compatibility with other manufacturers' WW collets to ensure they fit the Sherline adapter. Sherline also offers a slightly larger adapter and drawbar set to accommodate some other brands of 8 mm collets.
