The Sherline 6.7mm (.2638) WW Collet provides a precise and efficient method for mounting cylindrical parts or bar stock in a lathe. This collet functions as a small, precision 3-jaw chuck that fits into a specially designed tapered adapter within the headstock. The drawbar, threading through the headstock and into the collet's backside, pulls the collet into the adapter, causing its jaws to close and securely grip the part to be machined. This system ensures high centering accuracy, although each collet size accommodates only a narrow range of diameters.
WW collets are distinct from milling collets due to their through-hole design, allowing stock to pass entirely through. The maximum diameter for stock passing through is 3/16" or 4.5mm. Collets exceeding this diameter, known as "pot" chucks, are not bored through but are instead bored to a depth of .260". The collet's runout is minimal, with a maximum of .002" or less, ensuring precision in machining tasks.
Sherline collets are manufactured to standard WW specifications and are not hardened. They feature a shank diameter of .312-.313 and a .275-40 thread. It is crucial to verify compatibility with other manufacturers' WW collets to ensure they fit the Sherline adapter. The collets are available in both inch and metric sizes, with the metric sizes beginning with part number 1178, followed by digits indicating size in 0.1 mm increments.
