The Sherline 6.5mm (.2559) WW Collet offers a precise and efficient method for mounting cylindrical parts or bar stock in a lathe, ensuring high centering accuracy. This collet functions as a small, precision 3-jaw chuck that fits into a specially designed tapered adapter within the headstock. A drawbar threads through the headstock into the collet's backside, drawing it into the adapter, which causes the jaws to close and securely grip the part to be machined.

WW collets are distinct from milling collets due to their design, which includes a hole that runs entirely through both the collet and the drawbar. The maximum diameter of stock that can pass through the collet is 3/16" or 4.5mm. Collets larger than this diameter are known as "pot" chucks and are not bored through but are instead bored to a depth of .260". This design may result in increased runout further from the collet's front, depending on the setup and part length.

Sherline collets are manufactured to standard WW specifications and are not hardened. They feature a shank diameter of .312-.313 and a .275-40 thread. It is crucial to verify compatibility with other manufacturers' WW collets to ensure they fit the Sherline adapter. The collets are available in metric sizes from .3 mm to 8.0 mm in increments of .1 mm, with special sizes available upon request.
