The Sherline 6.4mm (.2520) WW Collet offers a precise and efficient method for mounting cylindrical parts or bar stock in a lathe, ensuring high centering accuracy. This collet functions as a small, precision 3-jaw chuck that fits into a specially designed tapered adapter within the headstock. The drawbar, threading through the headstock and into the collet's backside, pulls the collet into the adapter, causing the jaws to close and securely grip the part for machining. Each collet size accommodates a limited range of diameters, approximately ±.001″ (.02mm), providing a highly accurate part mounting system.

WW collets are distinct from milling collets due to their through-hole design, allowing stock with a maximum diameter of 3/16″ or 4.5mm to pass entirely through. Collets larger than this diameter are known as "pot" chucks and are not bored through but only to a depth of .260″. The collet's maximum runout is .002″ or less, and when the WW collet adapter is properly trued, it ensures optimal performance with minimal runout.

Sherline collets are manufactured to standard WW specifications, with a shank diameter of .312-.313 and a .275-40 thread. They are not hardened and are available in both inch and metric sizes. It is crucial to verify compatibility with other manufacturers' WW collets to ensure they fit the Sherline adapter. Special sizes and larger "pot" chucks can be custom ordered if needed.
