The Sherline 6.0mm (.2362) WW Collet provides an efficient method for mounting cylindrical parts or bar stock in a lathe with high centering accuracy. This collet functions as a precision 3-jaw chuck, fitting into a specially designed tapered adapter within the headstock. A drawbar threads into the collet's backside, drawing it into the adapter, which causes the jaws to close and securely grip the part for machining. Each collet accommodates a small range of diameters, approximately ±.001″ (.02mm), ensuring precise part mounting.
WW collets are distinct from milling collets due to their through-hole design, allowing stock to pass entirely through. The maximum diameter stock that can pass through is 3/16″ or 4.5mm. Collets larger than this diameter, known as "pot" chucks, are not bored through but are instead bored to a depth of .260″. This design may result in increased runout further from the collet's front, depending on the setup and part length.
Sherline collets are manufactured to standard WW specifications, with a shank diameter of .312-.313 and a .275-40 thread. They are not hardened and are designed to fit Sherline's specific drawbar and adapter. It is advisable to verify compatibility with WW collets from other manufacturers before purchase. Sherline also offers a slightly larger adapter and drawbar set to accommodate some other brands of 8 mm collets.
