The Sherline 3/64" (.0469) WW Collet offers a precise and efficient method for mounting cylindrical parts or bar stock in a lathe, ensuring high centering accuracy. This collet functions as a small, precision 3-jaw chuck that fits into a specially designed tapered adapter within the headstock. The mechanism involves a drawbar threading through the headstock and into the collet's backside, drawing it into the adapter and causing the jaws to close and securely grip the part to be machined.

WW collets are distinct from milling collets due to their through-hole design, allowing stock to pass entirely through. The maximum diameter for stock passing through is 3/16" or 4.5mm, although larger collets, known as "pot" chucks, are available. These collets are engineered to maintain a maximum runout of .002" or less, provided the WW collet adapter is trued as per instructions, ensuring optimal performance.

Sherline collets are logically numbered, with inch collets starting with part number 1160 followed by size in 64ths of an inch. Metric collets begin with part number 1178, indicating size in 0.1 mm increments. These collets are manufactured to standard WW specifications and are not hardened. It is crucial to verify compatibility with Sherline's adapter when considering WW collets from other manufacturers, as Sherline collets have a specific shank diameter and thread size.
