The Sherline 15/64" (.2344) WW Collet provides an efficient and precise method for mounting cylindrical parts or bar stock in a lathe. This collet functions as a small, precision 3-jaw chuck that fits into a specially designed tapered adapter within the headstock. The mechanism involves a drawbar that threads into the collet's backside, drawing it into the adapter, which in turn closes the jaws to securely grip the part being machined. This system ensures high centering accuracy, although each collet size accommodates only a narrow range of diameters.

WW collets are distinct from milling collets due to their through-hole design, allowing stock to pass entirely through. The maximum diameter for stock passing through is 3/16" or 4.5mm. Collets larger than this diameter are known as "pot" chucks and are not bored through, being only .260" deep. The collet's accuracy is notable, with a maximum runout of .002" or less, provided the WW collet adapter is trued as per instructions.

Sherline collets are logically numbered, with inch collets starting with part number 1160 followed by two digits indicating the size in 64ths of an inch. These collets are manufactured to standard WW specifications and are not hardened. It is crucial to verify compatibility with Sherline's adapter when considering collets from other manufacturers. Sherline also offers a slightly larger adapter and drawbar set to accommodate some 8 mm collets from other brands.
